Bipartisan proposal would let some former Idaho inmates seal records

Idaho lawmakers seeking to address criminal justice reform have proposed bipartisan legislation to allow certain offenders to get their record sealed.

Democrat and House Minority Leader Ilana Rubel of Boise, and Republican Senator Dave Lent of Idaho Falls are cosponsoring the so-called “clean slate” bill. If passed, the measure would apply to those who have committed non-violent, non-sexual offenses; completed their sentences including probation and parole; and who have gone at least three years without re-offending.

Representative Rubel hopes the legislation will have a transformative effect on those peoples’ lives, and allow them to better access jobs.

41 other states and the District of Columbia already offer some mechanism for adults to either expunge or seal their criminal records

The proposal has yet to be introduced, but supporters are hopeful the process begins soon.  (Boise State Public Radio)
