Anglers can earn cash and help save salmon and steelhead by participating in the Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program beginning Sunday, May 1st on the lower Columbia and Snake Rivers.
Bonneville Power Administration spokesman Doug Johnson says the goal of the program is to reduce the number of predators feeding on juvenile salmon and steelhead.
Anglers are paid 6 dollars to 10 dollars per fish, depending on the number caught through September.
Since 1990, nearly 5 million northern pikeminnow have been removed from the Snake and Columbia Rivers through the sport reward program. As a result, predation on juvenile salmon and steelhead has been cut by an estimated 40 percent.
