COLFAX, WA – The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office says an off-duty Sheriff’s Deputy received serious injuries while assisting a driver who had slid off the roadway due to poor weather conditions last week. According to a Facebook post, Cory Alcantar was helping the driver when another car lost control, sliding backward into him and pinning him between the two cars on Wednesday.

“Cory was not “working” at the time of the accident, but anyone who knows Cory knows his sense of duty to community and service to others never takes a day off,” the post says.
Alcantar was transported to Whitman Community Hospital and was later transferred to Deaconess Hospital in Spokane where he was treated for very serious injuries to his left leg.
“Cory is back home now with some new accompanying hardware and still has more surgery a few weeks down the road. The good news is his doctors believe he will make a full recovery. We have no doubt about that. Thanks for all those who have expressed thoughts and prayers on behalf of Cory Alcantar and his family. Deputy Alcantar will be off for several weeks but we anticipate he will be back to work on both legs soon enough,” the Sheriff’s Office says.
Alcantar is a former Colfax Police Officer.
