OLYMPIA, WA – An act relating to drought preparedness in Washington State was unanimously voted out of the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources with a “do pass” recommendation. House Bill 1138 is co-sponsored by Representative Tom Dent (R-Moses Lake).

HB 1138 modifies the name of the state drought preparedness and response account to the state drought preparedness account and directs the state treasurer to transfer into the account from the general fund $2.5 million at the beginning of each biennium.

In addition, this bill creates the emergency drought response account, coupled with the general fund as the recipient of the earnings from investments under RCW 43.84.092(4). Upon the issuance of an order of drought emergency, the state treasurer is directed to transfer to this account from the general fund such amounts as necessary to bring the balance of the account to $3 million.
