Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has appointed Jeremy Schmidt to the Spokane County Superior Court, replacing Judge John Cooney, who was recently appointed by the Governor to the Washington Court of Appeals, Division Three.
Currently, Schmidt serves as a commissioner on the Spokane County Superior Court, a position he has held since 2022. Before joining the bench, Schmidt worked as a senior counsel for the Spokane County Counsel for Defense, specializing in the defense of major felony crimes. Schmidt has also worked as a criminal prosecuting attorney at the Pend Oreille County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, handling felony and misdemeanor cases, as well as a special prosecutor for Lincoln County as part of a rural counties drug task force. Since 2018, Schmidt has served as an adjunct professor at the Gonzaga University School of Law, teaching litigation and trial skills. In addition, Schmidt has experience in civil litigation, including employment law, land use, and labor and industry issues.
