WINCHESTER, ID – Rescue personnel were called to the scene of a downed tree that had fallen onto an occupied fifth-wheel travel trailer at around 8:15 a.m. today. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office says the large tree had also fallen across a powerline at 216 Nezperce Avenue in the City of Winchester. The region has been experiencing high winds.
“Upon arrival the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office learned that three occupants remained within the trailer. Entry was made into the fifth wheel trailer and it was determined that three occupants were uninjured, however due [to] debris from the fallen tree, and downed powerlines, the occupants, and Sheriff’s Office remained inside a stable portion of the trailer until a safe exit could be made,” a press release states.
The Winchester Fire Department, Winchester Quick Response Unit, and Avista Power Company arrived on the scene and were able to de-energize the powerlines and cut a path to the fifth-wheel trailer allowing emergency medical, and fire services to assess the occupants, while also allowing a safe exit from the trailer.
The American Red Cross is responding to aid the occupants of the trailer.
The National Weather Service says a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. Southwest winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour, with gusts to 60 mph, are expected in Lewis County and parts of Nez Perce County.
