High Winds Continue to Hamper Firefighting Efforts on 1200-Acre Nisqually John Fire

COLTON, WA – The Nisqually John Fire has grown significantly since it was reported at around 8:38 a.m. yesterday. It is more than 1,200 acres, and high winds continue to push its growth. At this time, it is 0% contained.

According to WildCad, the fire is near Nisqually John Landing, about seven miles southwest of Colton. The Washington State Patrol approved a state mobilization and assigned the fire’s management to the Northeast Washington Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team #2, which has its command post at Colton High School.

“Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources on June 14, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the request of Fire Chief Jay Reisenauer, Whitman County Fire District 14,” a press release says.”

In addition to firefighting aircraft, crews from Whitman County Rural Fire District #14, Asotin County Fire District #1, the City of Clarkston, the City of Moscow, and Wheatland Fire have assisted in fighting the fire.
