COLFAX, WA – A 19-year-old Pullman woman who seriously injured her six-month-old nephew in late December was sentenced to a Mental Health Sentencing Alternative yesterday in Whitman County Superior Court. Tia Brown pled guilty on June 6th to Assault of a Child in the Second Degree.
“On December 28, 2023 Ms. Brown was babysitting her 6-month-old nephew when the child’s mother returned home and found baby was uncontrollably crying. The mother at first believed the child had a rash on his face, after police arrived on scene they determined that the baby had several bite marks over his face and body that left teeth impressions,” a press release from the Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office. “Through investigation the Pullman Police Department determined that the bite marks were from Tia Brown.
“The case was handled at the Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office by Deputy Prosecutor Lindsi Alcantar.
The sentencing alternative is allowed in Washington State for individuals who have been diagnosed with serious mental illness.
“Ms. Brown will be monitored by the Department of Corrections for 24 months and is required to undergo mental health treatment and will not be allowed to reside with or be alone with children under 13 years old for the duration of her supervision. If Ms. Brown fails to comply with her sentencing requirements she may be sentenced to 31-41 months in custody,” the press release adds.
“This is a successful outcome for Whitman County, it holds Ms. Brown accountable for her egregious actions when she was entrusted to watch her 6-month-old nephew, while also allowing Ms. Brown to seek the mental health treatment she requires. The Mental Health Sentencing Alternative is an avenue for those suffering from serious mental illness, it provides treatment and incentive for individuals who otherwise may not seek help,” Alcantar says. “When successfully completed it provides for a safer community for society. And if not successfully completed will result in prison.”
