Washington State University quarterback John Mateer has entered the NCAA transfer portal and intends to leave Pullman. WSU coach Jake Dickert confirmed Mateer’s decision to transfer in a news conference yesterday (Mon).
Mateer, who led the Cougars to an 8-4 record and helped secure a berth into the Holiday Bowl later this month in San Diego, will not suit up for the Crimson and Gray in their bowl game.
The, sophomore from Little Elm, Texas threw for 3,139 yards, with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also led the Cougars in rushing with 826 yards and 15 TDs on 178 carries. Mateer’s 826 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in 2024 are the most by a QB in a single season in Wazzu history and his 44 total touchdowns led the nation.
Coach Dickert says senior quarterback Zevi Eckhaus will step into the starting role in preparation for the Holiday Bowl game, December 27th against 21st ranked Syracuse.
