Washington Democrat U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell, chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and Patty Murray, chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations have announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Intercity Transit will receive several millions of dollars to deploy new technologies that will provide better information for travelers and streamline crossings at the Canadian border, and help identify dangerous intersections for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles.
Funding comes from the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grants program, which both Senator fought to secure in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
According to a news release, The Washington State Department of Transportation will receive nearly $6.6 million to update and improve wait times and traffic flow at Canadian Border. Intercity Transit, public transportation provider in Thurston County will receive $2 million to improve pedestrian safety. And the City of Seattle will also share in a nearly $15 million grant to manage curb space and reduce idling.
