BOISE, ID – Idaho Governor Brad Little has appointed John Cafferty as District Judge to the First Judicial District. Cafferty is Magistrate Judge in Kootenai County, serving since 2020 and Little says he brings nearly a decade of private practice experience and 11 years as a civil prosecutor in Kootenai County. He previously served as the city attorney for Post Falls. Cafferty attended Boise State University during his undergraduate studies and received his juris doctorate from University of Idaho.

“I would like to thank the Governor for his confidence and affording me this opportunity to serve the state of Idaho,” Cafferty says. “I look forward to continuing the legacy of impartial and efficient judicial service in the First Judicial District specifically, and Idaho generally.”

The position Cafferty will fill is chambered in Kootenai County. He will fill a vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable John T. Mitchell. The First Judicial District encompasses Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, and Shoshone Counties.

Idaho Code 1-2101, et seq., addresses how judicial vacancies in the Idaho Supreme Court, Idaho Court of Appeals, and District Courts are filled. The Idaho Judicial Council submits a list of at least three qualified candidates to Governor Little for appointment, consistent with Idaho law.
