A new record set by voters in Washington State is likely to go without much notice. Representative Mark Schoesler says more than 43,000 people signed in to the public hearing on the Senate’s proposed budget to oppose it. That’s more than 4-times the opposition to any previous bill.

A press release from Schoesler says Senate Bill 5978 would eliminate the 1% cap on annual property tax increases by state and local governments, tying it to inflation and population growth, potentially raising it as much as 9% annually. The increases would not require voter approval.

Schoesler says “I already knew how unpopular it would be to raise property taxes. But the hearing…was very historic when you realize that over 43,000 people…signed up to say they are against this terrible bill.”

Despite the opposition, he says democrats are expected to pass the bill Thursday, advancing it to the Senate.
