Lapwai High School students spent part of today cleaning up for Earth Day. It’s a senior project and adviser Derek Knoll says it’s a huge success. “They did a great job. I’m just monumentally proud of them.”

The plan was to clean up Main Street from Valley Foods to the elementary school, plus the park and the school. He says they did that…and then some. “These guys, these seniors went rogue. They were just like ‘hey, can we go here, can we go there?’ I’m like ‘you know what? Just do what you gotta do.’”

Knoll says this is the fourth year of cleaning up the town for a senior project, and he hopes it will continue every year as a legacy project. He doesn’t have the final tally yet, but he says they probably picked up 30 leaf bags worth of debris. Not only did they do the actual picking up, but the students involved learned how to organize the help, fund-raise for bags and snacks, and Knoll says while they had fun doing the work, they took the project very seriously.
