The Idaho Department of Fish and Game will close spring chinook fishing on the section of the lower Salmon River between Rice Creek Bridge and the Hammer Creek Boat Ramp at 9 p.m. Sunday.
The move is intended to lessen harvest on chinook bound for the upper Salmon River.
According to an analysis by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, if the season were left open there, about half of the fish harvested would be bound for the upper Salmon River, with the other half heading for the Rapid River hatchery. The season on the lower Salmon River is designed to target fish destined for Rapid River.
Chinook fishing will remain open on the Salmon River upstream of Hammer Creek and on the Little Salmon River. Chinook fishing also remains open on the Clearwater River and its North, South and Middle forks.
