The Association of Washington Business, the state’s oldest and largest statewide business association, presented a Legacy of Leadership award Monday to former Avista CEO Scott Morris.

Morris, who retired in 2019after nearly 40 years with Avista Corp. — including 11 as CEO —was recognized for his many contributions to the community, including his role in the development of the University District and bringing two medical schools to Spokane.

The award was presented by AWB along with the Journal of Business and Greater Spokane Incorporated during a ceremony at the Davenport Grand hotel, where AWB is meeting this week for its annual Policy Summit.

“There just aren’t many leaders like Scott Morris,” said AWB President Kris Johnson. “He not only has remarkable vision, but he also has a special and unique ability to inspire those around him to see potential and get excited about the projects they’re working on. I know every time I talk with Scott, I come away feeling energized. We are fortunate to have had his leadership as part of our community for these last several decades. Spokane, the Inland Empire and the entire region is a better place because of his presence.”

Morris grew up in Spokane and started working for Washington Water Power, now Avista, at age 23. He quickly moved up in the company, becoming president of Avista Utilities in 2000 and president chief operating officer in 2006. In 2008, he was named president and CEO. He retired as CEO in early 2019, but remains chairman of the board of directors.
