CALDWELL, ID – A 66-year-old Idaho man has been found guilty of First-Degree Murder and Rape in connection with the death of a nine-year-old girl in Nampa more than 42 years ago. A Canyon County jury found David Dalrymple guilty of the February 24, 1982, rape and drowning of Daralyn Johnson. Sentencing is set for September 6th at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Thomas J. Whitney.

Johnson was abducted and her battered body was found in a drainage ditch near the Snake River, about 18 miles away from her home.

Dalrymple lived a few blocks from the Johnson home and became a suspect in 2020 while serving a 20-year to life sentence for Second-Degree Kidnapping, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, Lewd Conduct With a Child, and several misdemeanors in a 2004 case involving a young girl, according to the court records. He was charged with Johnson’s murder in January 2022 after genetic genealogy testing was conducted.

The man originally charged with Johnson’s murder, Charles Fain, was convicted in November 1983 and was sentenced to death. He came within four days of being executed. The U.S. Supreme Court stayed the capital punishment in 1991. He was released from prison in 2001 after DNA testing proved he didn’t commit the crime.
