The Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office will seek the death penalty for a man accused of murder.
According to a news release, Nicholas Umphenour appeared in Nez Perce County Court yesterday (Thur) for his initial appearance in the murder of James Mauney. Umphenour is alleged to have murdered the Juliaetta man while he was on the run from authorities following an incident in Boise. During the investigation, detectives from various agencies compiled evidence linking Umphenour to the murder.
Umphenour had been housed in Ada County while his cases in that jurisdiction were resolved. He was then transported to the Nez Perce County Jail with coordination of the Idaho State Police, Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Lewiston Police Department and the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office to face charges of First Degree Murder.
Umphenou is being held without bond. His arraignment is set for December 12th in District Court where he will appear before Judge Michelle Evans.
