Medical Debt No Longer Reported On WA Credit Reports

Your medical debt can’t be put on your credit report any more if you live in Washington State. Governor Bob Ferguson signed Senate Bill 5480 yesterday. It keeps credit collectors from adding medical debt to your credit record.

Governor Ferguson made comments before signing the bill, saying it will help families across the state.  “This bill does not erase medical debut, but it removes barriers caused by that debt by lessening the impact to Washingtonians’ credit scores.”

The bill specifically mentions debts to cosmetic surgery. Elective cosmetic surgery is not covered. It does apply to cosmetic surgery that is part of trauma, infection, or other disease.
